I have several ideas for making neck corsets, but I'm a bit stumped on how to close them. I have the tools to put in grommets, but I suspect that having to relace a neck corset every time it is put on would be a total pain in the ass.
So, I'm thinking that maybe using buckles would be the best solution. My problem is that I've never put a buckle onto anything before. Does anyone have any tips for putting in the studs to secure the metal bits, good suppliers, and general tips?
Also, other suggestions for closing the piece would be greatly appreciated, too!
(of course, now that I'm thinking about it, decorative buttons and frogs might work... hmmm)

Re: buckles and neck corsets
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 8:09 PMah, neck corsets are sooo mucho sexy. you'll have to add pics when you finish this Isara!
I have also only seen traditional grommet and lacing for neck corsets (why I didnt buy one for my lover when I had the chance - even though it was turning me on right there in the store as she modeled it!) but since you are making your own, what do you think of sewing in hooks on each side of the opening to do speed lacing (like on the top of combat boots)
you can find delicate looking hooks to apply which would not detract from the beauty of the corset, but you'd then be able to unlace quickly, great if there is an emergency without having to cut it off.
Good luck!

Re: buckles and neck corsets
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 9:15 PMoooooh!!! Good thinking! I like the idea of using speed lacing, as long as there is a bottom set of grommets so that it doesn't come undone completely as you're tightening it. Might be able to make the neck corset a bit smaller so that there is a gap of tempting-looking skin showing. All of the other neck corsets I've seen have also closed completely.

Re: buckles and neck corsets
Sat, January 14, 2006 - 2:46 AMMy opinion is that a neck corset is supposed to be a pain in the ass. Come to think of it, waist cinching corsets are more or less a pain in the ass too. I say, don't underestimate the ritual of lacing the thing up.
In an emergency, one could always cut the lace, so it wouldn't be that big of a tragedy. Speed lacers mightn't be a bad idea. They set pretty much like rivets. If you go that route, you can find them at any shop that sells shoe findings. I get my hardware from The Leather Factory and Ohio Travel Bag.
As for buckles, OTB carries some nice locking roller buckels. Make sure and space them apart so they don't overlap each other. You could rivet the buckle mounting straps to the collar, or sew them directly to it. I personally prefer to stich things like that. It's lighter, smoother, and nicely done saddle stitching just looks sharp.

Re: buckles and neck corsets
Sat, January 28, 2006 - 7:58 PMWhy not go with a short-size busk (eg: www.farthingales.on.ca/busks.php). Take only 2 (maybe 3) knobs...
Should be ok if the neck corsets is not too tight.
Let us know what you end up with. -

Re: buckles and neck corsets
Sat, January 28, 2006 - 9:05 PMI actually have some of the tiny busks. ordered em by accident and have never figured out what to use them with.
The problem with busks is that the little suckers pop right off unless there's enough tension. Hmm. I wonder if there were an elastic panel, it might provide enough tension but also enough slack to use the busk. -

Re: buckles and neck corsets
Sun, January 29, 2006 - 4:12 PMyes, right it depends on the tension of the corset.
Fastening is a recurrent problem, not only for neck corsets.
Another method that i use is velcro, single or double strap/wrap. In the case of a neck corset since there is not a lot of tension, a single wrap should suffice. At least, velcro can be easily hidden.
Or maybe some kind of buckles with fast release (snap-on) (eg see myebestbuy.com) if you don't mind that they be visible (or maybe hidden under hairs :) )...
